The Story of Yonghe Temple
Yonghe Temple — the Lama Temple — is Beijing's most celebrated Tibetan Buddhist monastery. Built in 1694 as an imperial palace before being converted to a lamasery, it carries the weight of centuries within its golden-roofed halls. Known especially for its 26-meter Maitreya Buddha carved from a single white sandalwood tree, Yonghe Temple is believed to be a powerful place for career success, wealth, and protection. The air is thick with the scent of Tibetan incense as monks in maroon robes chant sutras that have echoed through these halls for generations.
