Putuo Mountain Temple

Zhoushan, China

The Story of Putuo Mountain Temple

Rising from the misty waters of the East China Sea, Putuo Mountain is one of Buddhism's four sacred mountains — the legendary home of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. For centuries, women and families have made pilgrimages across the sea to this island sanctuary, praying to Guanyin for the gift of children. The sound of waves mingles with temple bells as incense smoke drifts through ancient cypress groves. It is said that Guanyin hears every whispered wish for a child here, where the sacred mountain meets the endless ocean.
